Welcome to Next Man Up, where we will take a look at the injury situation around the NBA and which players stand to benefit from those injuries. We will be examining the most DFS relevant injuries here and the fantasy spin associated with those injuries. Please note, some games on each night’s slate will not be included if there are no injury situations worth monitoring. As you know, a player’s injury status can change rapidly, so be sure to check for news before lineups lock.
Spurs at Heat
Out: Tim Duncan, Matt Bonner, Chris Andersen.
Questionable: Hassan Whiteside, Udonis Haslem, Luol Deng.
Fantasy Spin: Deng and Haslem are both dealing with illnesses and missed the team’s shootaround this morning. Their status is up in the air for tonight, so this is a situation you will have to monitor right up until tip-off. If Deng is out, Justise Winslow would likely start at small forward and would see extensive minutes. For the Spurs, Duncan will miss his eighth straight game. The situation for his replacements hasn’t changed. David West will likely start, but he has limited upside. Boban Marjanovic may see some extra minutes, but his playing time can’t be counted on. He’s a tournament punt play at best.
Celtics at Bucks
Out: John Henson, Greivis Vasquez.
Probable: Jae Crowder, O.J. Mayo, Jerryd Bayless.
Fantasy Spin: Crowder is the most interesting name on the injury report, but he appears likely to play tonight. If he is a surprise inactive, look for the Celtics to go small with Marcus Smart seeing some extra time. Evan Turner would also see some additional minutes at the three. The Bucks are a favorable matchup for opposing small forwards, so whoever plays will be in a good position to produce. On the Milwaukee side of things, the Bucks are likely to get Mayo back tonight. John Henson has been out for five straight games now. The main result of the injuries in Milwaukee has been Jason Kidd playing his starters extra minutes.
Jazz at Mavericks
Out: Alec Burks, Trey Burke, Devin Harris.
Fantasy Spin: In Utah, the Jazz will be forced to give extended minutes to Raul Neto with Burke, his primary backup, out. Neto is playing consistent, if unspectacular, minutes but he lacks upside. On the Mavericks, both J.J. Barea and Raymond Felton will split minutes. Neither is a particularly strong fantasy play when Deron Williams is active.
Rockets at Warriors
Out: Terrence Jones.
Questionable: James Harden.
Fantasy Spin: The Rockets will be without Jones, who is still recovering from a concussion. With Jones out, Corey Brewer and Trevor Ariza have been starting together as the Rockets have been playing small ball often. Both are good bets to play around 30 minutes. This game has an extremely high over/under of 229.5, and Brewer and Ariza offer a way to get some exposure without breaking the bank. Harden is listed as questionable, but it is being called minor and he is expected to be able to play tonight.
