Welcome to Next Man Up, where we will take a look at the injury situation around the NBA and which players stand to benefit from those injuries. We will be examining the most DFS relevant injuries here and the fantasy spin associated with those injuries. Please note, some games on each night’s slate will not be included if there are no injury situations worth monitoring. As you know, a player’s injury status can change rapidly, so be sure to check for news before lineups lock.
Out: Donatas Motiejunas, Alan Anderson.
Doubtful: Markieff Morris.
Questionable: Reggie Jackson, Reggie Bullock, Gary Neal.
Probable: Tobias Harris, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Fantasy Spin: The main source of value tonight comes from Markieff Morris’ availability. Morris is not expected to join the team in time to play tonight, so look for Jared Dudley to get one final start at the four, with Nene Hilario also playing heavy minutes. For Detroit, their rotation remains a question mark with all the new players in town and Caldwell-Pope expected to return to action tonight. If Caldwell-Pope plays tonight, he should be a nice source of value as his salary has dipped to $5,500 on DraftKings and $5,600 on FanDuel. He should be able to hit value against a Wizards team that, over its last 10 contests, is allowing the second-most fantasy points per game to shooting guards on FanDuel.
Out: Eric Gordon.
Doubtful: Joel Anthony.
Probable: Nerlens Noel.
Fantasy Spin: It appears Gordon is nearing a return, but he is not going to play tonight. Bryce Dejean-Jones, fresh off signing a multi-year contract with the Pelicans, should see another start at shooting guard in the meantime. Dejean-Jones has been up-and-down, but has shown he has some upside. He can be considered a good tournament play tonight as he faces off against the 76ers.
Out: Chris Bosh, Hassan Whiteside.
Questionable: Kirk Hinrich, Dwyane Wade.
Fantasy Spin: Whiteside is suspended for tonight and Chris Bosh will be out with blood clots for the foreseeable future. Amare Stoudemire is the best bet for a value play heading into tonight as he was excellent while starting for Whiteside earlier in the year. The outlook for replacing Bosh is less clear, but Luol Deng has said he expects to play more power forward while Justise Winslow should move into the starting lineup at small forward. Keep an eye on Josh McRoberts as well as he will see additional playing time. All three are worth gambling on tonight while we wait to see how Miami’s rotation shakes out minus Bosh. Upgrade Gerald Green if Dwyane Wade’s knee soreness holds him out of tonight’s contest.
Out: Spencer Hawes, Courtney Lee, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Doubtful: John Henson, Jerryd Bayless.
Questionable: Marvin Williams.
Fantasy Spin: Al Jefferson will make his return to Charlotte’s lineup after missing the past 23 games. Jefferson is just $5,800 on FanDuel and $5,600 on DraftKings. While he’s seen his playing time reduced some this year, he is still capable of putting up double-doubles. He is a better cash play as he lacks upside. With Kidd-Gilchrist lost for the season, Courtney Lee not able to play until he passes a physical, and Marvin Williams questionable, Frank Kaminsky and Cody Zeller should both play heavy minutes in the frontcourt while Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb should be busier than usual as well.
Out: Terrence Jones, Sam Dekker, Brandon Knight.
Doubtful: Kris Humphries.
Questionable: Ronnie Price.
Probable: Patrick Beverley.
Fantasy Spin: Motiejunas hadn’t been playing much this season, so his departure does little to open up additional playing time. That being said Houston has been playing small since Terrence Jones got hurt. This means Trevor Ariza and Corey Brewer should continue to provide salary cap relief in a game featuring two poor defenses squaring off. For Phoenix, Mizra Teletovic is likely to start at power forward for the Suns with Markieff Morris in Washington. With prices at or below $4,000 on the major sites, he is in line to be a strong value play this evening. Houston is one of the worst teams in the league at stopping opposing power forwards.
Doubtful: J.J. Hickson, Jameer Nelson, D.J. Augustin.
Questionable: Omri Casspi, Marco Belinelli.
Probable: Darrell Arthur, Rajon Rondo, Ben McLemore.
Fantasy Spin: The Kings could be without both Casspi and Belinelli while Ben McLemore is slated to make a return to the lineup. This could bode well for McLemore’s chances as the kings take on a Nuggets team that is among the top-10 in the league in fantasy points allowed to opposing shooting guards. He’s a decent tournament option.
Out: Manu Ginobili.
Doubtful: Kawhi Leonard.
Questionable: Matt Bonner, Anthony Brown.
Fantasy Spin: Don’t expect Leonard to play tonight as he left last night’s game early with a calf issue. Kyle Anderson started in his place yesterday and spent 28 minutes on the floor. He didn’t have a great game, scoring just eight points and adding three rebounds and one assist. His outlook looks better today against a Lakers team that is in the top-five in fantasy points allowed to enemy small forwards in a game that could get out of hand as the Spurs are heavy favorites tonight.
