Undervalued Players Part 1: Randolph, Pekovic and Humphries
October 3, 2012 | Mark Kaplan
Throughout the next couple of weeks, I will be giving you players that are underrated in fantasy basketball and could be great values when you’re assembling your squad during drafts. While most people think that fantasy leagues are won by the team with the best early round picks, I think they are won by who you draft in rounds 5-10 because those are always solid players that can have huge contributions for fantasy squads . Here are a couple of players I’m targeting later in the draft.
Kris Humphries PF, BKN (ESPN rank 64, Yahoo! Rank 70, FakeBasketball Rank 67)
Most people relate this guy to a Kardashian ( 1st and last time that name will ever be spoken on this blog), However I relate this guy to fantasy greatness. He brings it every game and has no real competition behind him. He ranked as a top 30 player in H2H scoring formats. Was 6th in the league in rebounds, had 74 Blocks (which is more than 1 per game), and doesn’t hurt your FG%. A 5th round pick would be perfect placement for him, but he might slip farther so be prepared to grab him in the 6th round
Zach “ Z-Bo” Randolph PF,C Mem- (ESPN rank 68,Yahoo! Rank 66, FakeBasketball Rank 56)
Was amazed how poorly ranked he was and that’s why he is on the list. Z-Bo is easily one of the best PFs in the league and in fantasy. Last year he was drafted in the 3rd round of most draft, so now all of the sudden he is slipping 30-40 spots= 3-4 rounds later? That’s ludicrous He was 4th in the NBA in rebounds during the 2010-2011 season and in his first 2 full HEALTHY seasons with Memphis he averaged 20.8 points and 11.7 rebounds in ’09-’10 and 20.1 points and 12.2 rebounds per game in ’10-’11. That’s top 25 OVERALL fantasy numbers. If Z-Bo slips past the 3rd round then make sure to snatch him and telling from the rankings you might even be able to get him in the 5th or 6th round which would be fantasy GOLD.
Staying with the Big Man theme for the next guy.
Nikola Pekovic C, Min ( ESPN rank 78, Yahoo! Rank 135, FakeBasketball Rank 61)
He put up huge numbers once he became the full time starter and there is no reason to think he won’t continue to put up close to a double-double (or as I like to call it a dublay- dublay) this season. He averaged 14 points and 7.4 rebounds per game last year and that was before he became the full time starter. Teams will focus on K. Love so there is a lot of opportunity for Pekovic to grab rebounds. The Yahoo! ranking is absurd and makes me mad. He is so much better than what he ranked, but that’s why he is on the list folks.
That’s it for now. Stay tuned because there are a lot more players I’m going to talk about that will be KEY for your fantasy team. Also, you can tweet me Fantasy Basketball questions @datrueguru.
