Fantasy Basketball: Underrated Players: Part 2

posted by Mark Kaplan

Here are some underrated guards you should target going into your draft.

Lou Williams (ESPN 71st,Yahoo! 89, Fakebasketball 89th,)- The Hawks lost Joe Johnson, but added Lou Williams, who should fill the void that Joe left. Lou-Will can score with the best of them and should get plenty of playing time for the Hawks. He was a solid fantasy asset last year, but now he gets to be of the primary scorer for the Hawks as they don’t really have a lot of other scoring options. This is a guy that could easily outperform his draft position.

O.J. Mayo (ESPN 92nd ,Yahoo!96th, Fakebasketball 96th)- As a Grizzlies fan (yes, there are Grizz fans), it hurts to see O.J. go to another team, but as a fantasy owner, it makes me happy. Mayo could score with the best of them and played out of position last year for the Grizzlies. Now he gets to be the starting SG for the Dallas Mavs (something Jason Terry never was) so he will contribute all across the board. Mayo can hit 3s, score in bunches, get to the rim, and is a solid passer. Also, I think there is a solid chance he can be leading scorer on the team.

Brandon Roy (ESPN not in top 150, Yahoo! 154, Fakebasketball 45th SG)– Oh the mighty have fallen. Roy was once a 2nd round pick, but had to retire last year because of his knees. He claims to be healthy so the T-Wolves signed him to a 2 year deal. Listen! if an NBA team believes he is back and gave him 10 MILLION dollars, then I feel confident trusting him on my fantasy team. 2nd, The risk/reward on Roy is one of the best out there because the risk is minimal compared to where he is being drafted and the reward is a top 30 player. His last full year as a starter in ’09-‘10 he averaged 21.5 points, 4.7 assist, & 4.4 rebounds. There is no one ranked as low as him that could yield that production and that is why he is on this list.

Roto League darling: Kirk Hinrich PG, SG (ESPN-not in top 150, Yahoo! 138, Fakebasketball unranked)- He will be the starting PG for Da Bulls which means he could easily see 33-37 minutes per game. The last time he averaged over 35 minutes per game was in 2006-07 when he averaged 35.5 as a starter for, yep the Chicago Bulls. That year he averaged 1.8 3 PTM, 3 rebs, 6.3 ast, and 16.6 points per game. Even though that was a long time ago, if he gets close to those numbers then he will have a great fantasy year. If Hinrich is you’re worst starter in a roto league then your team is going to be solid.
